What is Dundee Mountain Film Festival?

Dundee Mountain Film Festival (DMFF) is an annual celebration of adventure, film and the great outdoors.

The festival brings together inspiring speakers, adventure films, exhibitions and trade stands. It features stories from the mountains and beyond.

You can expect films about climbing, mountaineering, trail running, skiing, cycling and many other outdoor activities. You’ll also here stories about the people behind these adventures.

DMFF has been inspiring people to get outdoors since 1983. It is the UK’s longest-running mountain film festival.

 

When is Dundee Mountain Film Festival?

The festival is held over one weekend each year in early winter.

This year DMFF takes place from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 November 2026.

 

Where does the festival take place?

The 2026 festival will take place at Abertay University and Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) in Dundee.

What can I expect at DMFF?

Expect a weekend packed with great films, inspiring speakers and stories of adventure.

Our programme covers a wide range of outdoor activities. These include Himalayan expeditions, climbing, mountain biking, trail running, skiing and wild swimming.

There are also films about smaller adventures closer to home!

We also show a selection of films from the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival.

Films explore more than just adventure. They also look at conservation, culture, identity and our links with wild places.

You can also hear from guest speakers, enjoy refreshments and meet other people who love the outdoors.

There are exhibition spaces to explore and trade stands to browse.

 

Do I need to be a mountaineer to enjoy the festival?

Absolutely not!

You don’t need to climb mountains or own a pair of crampons to enjoy DMFF. You don’t even need to know your Munros from your Corbetts!

The festival is about great stories, inspiring people and a love of the outdoors.

Whether you’re an experienced climber, a keen hillwalker, an aspiring adventurer or simply a fan of great films, there is something for you.

 

Is DMFF suitable for families?

Yes! We welcome families and young people.

We always aim to include films and activities for a range of ages on our programme. However, age suitability can vary between films. Please check the programme before booking.

There are also child concessions for the Saturday morning and afternoon sessions:

• Under-5s: free
• Under-12s: half price

These tickets are subject to availability and must be bought at the venue.

 

Is the venue accessible?

Abertay University Old College Building is wheelchair accessible. You can find its accessibility guide here.

Is there parking available at the festival?

There are paid parking spaces near both venues. These include on-street parking and council car parks such as Bell Street Hub.

Please note that the festival venues are within Dundee’s Low Emission Zone (LEZ).

If you are driving to the festival, your vehicle must meet the LEZ rules. You can find more information on the Dundee City Council website.

Who organises Dundee Mountain Film Festival?

DMFF is organised by volunteers of the Dundee Mountain Film Festival Society, a registered Scottish charity.

The festival has strong links with Dundee’s outdoor community. Local climbing and mountaineering enthusiasts help organise and support the festival.

We also work with outdoor organisations, sponsors and local partners to bring the festival to life.

 

How long has DMFF been running?

DMFF began in 1983.

Since then, we have only missed two festivals because of the Covid lockdowns. This means 2026 is our 42nd year.

 

When will the programme be announced?

The full film line-up is announced a couple of months before each festival.
